Seng Khasi is a Socio-Religio-Cultural organisation of the indigenous Khasis belonging to the Khasi Religion. Its aim was the protection and preservation of Niam Khasi, the customs and traditions of the indigenous Khasis which distinguishes the Khasi as a race distinct and different from any other race in the world.
Seng Khasi came to be established as the first indigenous organization of its kind among the Khasis because of the compelling force of circumstances prevailing then, after the Khasis states have been conquered and brought under the rule of the British.
Responsible Khasi leaders felt apprehensive at the corroding influence which the new dispensation was having on the Khasi community as a whole. Sixteen young men of Niam Khasi decided to form the Seng Khasi – an organisation which took upon itself the work of protecting the Khasi religion, the customs and traditions and, on the whole, the culture of the Khasi race, so as to ensure that its distinct identity in the world is preserved for all time to come.
In tune with the vision, the Seng Khasi organises indigenous traditional-cultural activities which include, among others: (1) Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem (Thanks Giving Dance) held in the month of April every year, (2) Ka Seng Kut Snem (Annual Day of Seng Khasi) on 23rd November of every year, (3) Ka Kiew lum Sohpetbneng (Annual Rituals of Sohpetbneng Peak) held in the first week of February every year. Along with such activities, the Seng Khasi also established its own educational educations with a view to providing a well-rounded universal education tempered by sound traditional values. Seng Khasi College bears testimony to this endeavour.
